CNN reports today that the Trump-backed Republican candidate for governor of Pennsylvania Doug Mastriano is suing the House Select (AKA Jan 6) committee. In his filing, Mastriano claims the committee does not have the authority to compel his deposition, or that of any other witness that does not wish to be deposed. The complaint states further that:
the Committee has no authority to conduct compelled depositions
Mastriano was willing to sit for a voluntary interview
because he is currently the Republican nominee for Governor of Pennsylvania, the Committee should have offered prophylactic (his words, not GOTV's) measures that would ensure there would be no risk of improperly influencing the Pennsylvania state election
Mastriano made a virtual appearance earlier this month before the January 6 committee. That appearance lasted only about 15 minutes, during which the nominee answered no questions. Keep in mind too that he was a strong supporter of Donald Trump's efforts to overturn the 2020 election, and was among the mob of Trump supporters on Capitol grounds on January 6, 2021.
All that, and he still tries to play the victim, and to claim that any exposure of him to legal questions will jeopardize his chances for election. Can you say chutzpah, boys and girls?
